Kid Friendly Kitchen Safety Tips

By Bowen

cooking with kidsFall means back to school, earlier sunsets and more evening time indoors. It is a great time to spend time with the family cooking. For after-school snacks, your kids may want to fix their own, or you may want to let them help prepare dinner (a little extra help for Mom and Dad after a busy workday is always great!)

Use this opportunity to educate your children about cooking, safety and nutrition. Remember that in the kitchen, safety must come first. Here are a few helpful kitchen safety tips to remember when your cooking with your kids:
1. Always be aware of what your children are working on. Don’t turn your back on your children when you’re cooking together, especially when they are using knives or are at the stove.
2. Let kids take an active role in cooking. Give them age-appropriate tasks such as ripping lettuce leaves for salad, stirring pudding or measuring flour.
3. Explain what you’re doing - you’ll be amazed at what they remember.
4. Baking is always a good place to start your kids’ cooking education, because it doesn’t require knives and uses simple ingredients.
5. Turn off the TV during cook time, and leave it off when the meal is ready.

Bowen Family Homes offers a variety of home plans.  Many open plans feature kitchens which are situated with great views to the family room, dining room, keeping rooms, etc. making the homes ideal for entertaining - plus chefs can still see their guests if they are doing last minute items for a dinner party.
