Given the situation with Florida home insurance, you have a much higher chance of finding lower cost insurance if you contact multiple independent agents that represent a large number of companies to cover your home instead of using the quote generator websites. Since each agent may represent a different group of companies, contacting more than one agent is your best chance to get a Florida home insurance quote from all the companies writing new business in your local market.

I buy both kinds.
I personally live in what I call a HOME. It is not an investment, it is a home that meets my families needs, not just in structure but in neighborhood and school district.
I also buy property to rent out. Not in this neighborhood. It is bought with both cash flow (I must be able to rent it for more then the expenses) and resale value. I used to buy and sell constantly, but this market has me holding. I have only sold 2 of my properties in the last couple of years, one only because it was out of state and hard to manage.
If you plan to live there foreever make sure it is perfect for YOU, don't worry about how well it will sell to someone else.
I know how you feel. My escape of that kind of life, I'm sorry to admit, was getting into a relationship with a guy who earns a good salary. I didn't marry him for that reason, but it was a nice side benefit.
Have you considered joining Peace Corps when you get back to the States? I think Peace Corps offers some student loan forgiveness (if you have student loans), and it would certainly allow you to travel.
When you do start teaching, although you won't have a high salary, you'll have a decent one. I knew a couple where the husband worked for a school district and the wife was a student, and they scrimped and saved to go on great vacations every year. They lived in a tiny apartment and drove an old car, and saved all their money for travel. That was important to them. They have so many crazy stories about all the places they'd been… I envied them.
